The 1st Round proper of the Connacht Junior Cup took place this Sunday and as ever there were a few close contests and the odd shock result into the bargain. The main winners were Sligo who shocked Division 1 table-toppers Castlebar and Corinthians who defeated arch-rivals Galwegians. Corinthians left it late against Galwegians in a highly entertaining match which saw four tries (two each) at Cloonacauneen. It was a very tight affair all the way, but two second-half penalties from John McDonagh had given an understrength Wegians an 18-17 lead entering the final few minutes. But a strong finish by the home side resulted in a late penalty by ex-Galwegian Stephen Hutchinson and an injury-time try by Ian Morrisssey which sees them progress into the second round. Their next opponents will be Sligo, who stunned a fancied Castlebar team in Strandhill. They defeated the Mayo outfit by the narrow scoreline of 10-8, despite Castlebar having been unbeaten this season in their Division 1 campaign. So this was the shock result of the day. The Buccaneers, who had finished joint top of Division 1 with Castlebar, were given a real fright at Second Division Tuam before emerging winners by 13-9. Their reward is a tricky asignment away to Westport who proved too strong for Dunmore, running out comfortable winners by 37-6. In the other games, Division 1 Corrib had to work hard in their local derby against Second Division Ballinrobe before emerging winners by 12-7. They now have a home tie against a strong Gort side who brushed aside Connemara in Clifden by 28-3. The final quarter-final tie will see Creggs host Boys Club. Creggs were comfortable 42-10 winners against the luckless NUIG, while Boys Club dug out a hard-earned but impressive 9-6 victory over Ballina. |
