Three of the four quarter finals of the “Rugby Active” Connacht Junior Cup took place this weekend, with the 3 C’s: Corinthians, Corrib & Creggs all progressing to the semi-finals. The surprise result of the day was at Headford where Corrib confounded their League placing by knocking out League play-off qualifiers Gort. In a low-scoring game, a single converted try for the home side proved enough to ensure a 7-3 win and their passage through to the semi-finals, where they will meet the winners of the remaining quarter-final tie between Westport and Buccaneers (Sunday April 28 3pm in Westport). Corinthians proved too strong for Sligo at Cloonacauneen, running out comfortable 25-3 winners. Sligo had caused the upset of Round 1 when they dumped out table-toppers Castlebar, so on this evidence Corinthians will be hard to beat. Their semi-final opponents will be Creggs, who booked their place when they made home advantage pay against Boys Club. Creggs scored 21 points in the process while managing to shut out their opponents to nil, so they are certainly a side to be reckoned with. Finally congratulations must go to Ballina who on Sunday became Connacht U-18 Cup champions. The decisive score was a single converted try which ensured a 7-0 win for Clive Moore’s charges, so the Cup deservedly goes to North Mayo to Heffernan Park. |
