It was a very disappointing weekend for all Connacht sides who were in action in AIL competitions this weekend. In the IRFU J1 Millennium Cup, Galwegians went down 24-12 to a very strong Old Belvedere side at the Sportsground. Wegians went 14-0 down in the first five minutes, but they regrouped and got back into contention through tries by Ivan Muldoon & Martin Lynskey, one of which was converted by John McDonagh. But it is the Leinster sidfe who go through to the semis. This ended Connacht’s interest in the competition with Corinthians having lost to Cork Con last weekend. In the J2 Millennium Cup Loughrea put up a spirited performance before going down 24-11 to Old Crescent. The match between Tuam and Kilkenny was cancelled. In the AIL U-20 Cup semi-final the Buccaneers great run came to a halt in Cork last Sunday when they lost to an outstanding UCC side in Cork on Saturday. The Buccs lost 23-10 with all their points coming from out-half Colm Glynn. However they will have a chance to finish their season in style when they play local rivals Galwegians in the Connacht U-20 Cup Final this Saturday at Galway Sportsground. This game will bring together many players who have gained AIL experience at senior level for both clubs and should provide excellent entertainment for those who attend. In the Senior AIL League qualifiers Westport played out their last game and went down to Kilkenny 43-10. However neither side will progress to Division 3. Queens University gained the automatic spot, while Highfield must play-off Richmond. |
