Connacht’s 100% record in this season’s Celtic League was smashed at the Galway Sportsground as powerful Pontypridd chalked up their fifth win on the trot. Pontypridd led 15-0 at half-time with the game scoreless for the opening half hour as both sides drove into each other with great spirit, and while there were no scores there was much for the huge crowd to enjoy. Neil Jenkins edged Pontypridd in front on the half hour with a penalty and then five minutes later right-winger Gareth Wyatt burst through for their opening try in the corner. Neil Jenkins was wide with the convert, but he made no mistake two minutes later when centre John Bryant touched down after Pontypridd had ran the ball from their own line after an Eric Elwood drop goal was short. Jenikins added a penalty within three minutes of the restart, before Emyr Lewis made it 23-0 with his side’s third try two minutes later. Gareth Wyatt got his second try of the match four minutes later with Jenkins adding the points. Connacht wrung the changes but it was Pontypridd who increased their lead in the final quarter, with Robert Sidoli getting their fifth try and Jenkins adding the points from the end. Full-back Brett Davey added a drop goal nine minutes from the end as Pontypridd tacked on the points. Results elsewhere mean that Pontypridd, Connacht, Glasgow and Cardiff are through to the quarter-finals, with home advantage to be decided in the last round of games at the end of the month. Connacht, who meet Mont de Marsan away and at home over the next two weeks in the Parker Pen Challenge Cup, travel to Glasgow for the final round of games. Connacht: Pontypridd: Referee: A.
