Munster 24 9 Connacht

EGMunsterDec350Trys from Tomás O’Leary and Sean Scanlon, along with four penalties and a conversion from Ian Keatley gave Munster the win in this St Stephens Day Inter-Provincial clash. Keatley got the hosts underway with a penalty after 15 minutes, having missed 2 previous chances, but only after Connacht’s Niall O’Connor had missed a long range shot at goal following a powerful Connacht scrum which saw Ronan Loughney win a penalty for the visitors. Wave after wave of Connacht attack was absorbed by the Minster defence and when a stray pass was hacked down field it took a superb chase back from Mike McCarthy and John Muldoon to force Ian Keatley to knock on with the line beckoning.

JOCMunsterDec350Referee Dudley Phillips stamped his authority on the match early on with both sides feeling the wrath of the whistle. Niall O’Connor traded early penalties with Keatley but O’Leary and Scanlon’s trys gave Munster an 18 3 lead at halftime. 2 more O’Connor penalties were cancelled out by the boot of Ian Keatley and despite the majority of possession and a numerical advantage after Donncha O’Callaghan was sin-binned Connacht were unable to convert pressure to points and on John Hayes’ last game Munster ran out 24 9 victors.

Connacht XV to face Munster in Thomond
Friday, 23 December 2011 10:14    Print E-mail

Connacht Rugby have announced the side that will face Munster this St Stephens Day in Thomond Park.

Eric and team350Following Connacht’s excellent display against Gloucester in the Heineken Cup last weekend Head Coach Eric Elwood has chosen not to tinker with the side too much, making just one enforced change. Fetu’u Vainikolo replaces Mark McCrea on the wing. McCrea was forced to retire from last weekend’s clash with a strained hamstring giving the Tongan International winger a berth in the starting XV.

Connacht know that Thomond Park has not been a happy hunting ground for the team in recent years but following spirited back to back displays against Aviva Premiership giants Gloucester the squad know that if they continue this rich vein of form that elusive win is just around the corner.

Connacht’s hugely experienced pack will scrum down with no fewer than 747 caps for the Province between them while the dynamic young backline will be marshalled by captain Gavin Duffy from fullback.

Heineken Cup dates confirmed

The time and dates for Connacht’s next two Heineken Cup matches have been confirmed. Connacht will travel to Stade Toulousain Ernest Wallon on HCupBalls350Saturday 14th January (kick off 16.40) while Harlequins will visit the Sportsground on Friday 20th January (kick off 20.00) for their final pool 6 match.

With just 4 points separating the top 3 sides in the pool every match is vital and every point is crucial and as Connacht head off to the South of France Harlequins will welcome Aviva Premiership rivals Gloucester to the Stoop. A win for either team will see their chances of qualification increase dramatically while Toulouse will not relish meeting a resurgent Connacht, knowing that their hopes of making the last 8 may lie in the balance.

Tickets for Connacht’s match against Harlequins can be purchased from www.TicketMaster.ie

Remaining Pool 6 fixtures:

Round 5:

SATURDAY, 14 JANUARY 2012
