Muldoon undergoes surgery for broken arm
Sunday, 13 June 2010 10:13    Print E-mail

Connacht captain John Muldoon will undergo surgery on his broken arm in Auckland  before returning home with Jamie Heaslip.

Muldoon suffered the injury in the opening half of Ireland's 66-28 loss to New Zealand on Saturday.

Ireland U20 Captain Rhys Ruddock has been called up to join the Ireland touring squad in New Zealand.

The uncapped Ruddock was taking part in the Junior World Championships in Argentina but has been released by the U20 Coach Allen Clarke to join his first senior tour.

Ruddock gets his opportunity following the broken arm suffered by John Muldoon and the five week suspension given to No.8 Jamie Heaslip for his red card in the game.  With both players out of the tour, Ruddock will fly from Argentina immediately and will join the team in Rotoura on Monday evening ahead of the game against New Zealand Maori on Friday (18 June).

Ireland Coach Declan Kidney said, “We are obviously disappointed to be losing John following his injury, I felt any replacement should be one that would benefit from the experience.”

“There were other options in terms of back row replacements, but rather than bring in somebody who we were already aware of and what they could bring (to the squad), we felt Rhys would be a different option. He has performed very well for the U20’s and with Leinster when he has had the chance to play this season, so this will be a good chance for him to gain experience and we have every confidence in him”.

MUL'S DIARY ... part one

Connacht skipper John Muldoon will be keeping fans updated on the Irish tour Down Under this summer. Here’s the first of his letters from New Zealand ……

We didn’t have any time to dwell on the outcome of the Baabaa’s match on Friday night as we had to get ourselves into travel mode for the long journey to New Zealand.

With an early wake up call 4.30am there were some tired heads on the bus.

Three flights later we arrived in Auckland at midnight on Sunday. Needless to say, there were some very grouchy and odour-fuelled bodies.

As usual Fogs (John Fogarty) was the worst but as we know from his time in Connacht, it doesn’t require three long flights halfway round the world for him to make an impact in this regard.
My room mate is Niall Ronan from Munster. I've known Niall for a long time as we played Irish u18 together, which now seems like a very long time ago.

We trained twice Monday which I must admit was tough going. The legs and mind were still suffering a lot from jetlag.

While in the gym I met an Irish man, his family were from Connemara, with a good west Galway name Joyce.

The rest of Monday was a write-off. The biggest battle was trying not to sleep after dinner. I managed to stay awake until bedtime and I woke up Tuesday morning feeling like a new person after a great night’s sleep.

Niall had to go for a walk around 3.30am as he didn’t fight the urge to sleep at 9’o’clock and he spent a while ceiling-watching during the night.

The Tuesday morning of a match week is always strange as you are really trying to avoid Deccie (Declan Kidney) like the plague. If Deccie
comes talkin to ya that means bad news.

I'm not quick over the ground by any means but I made sure to stay well away. Thankfully when the team was named in our meeting both Sean and myself managed to get starting places!!

Obviously it's going be a special occasion and it's also very nice to have a fellow Connacht player there stuck in it too.

At this stage Saturday can't come quick enough. But our travel isn't done yet as we fly on Thursday to New Plymouth.
It’s been fairly hectic since we arrived here and we haven’t had much time to see the place or get up to much.

But Gavin, Sean and myself are to meet up with a familiar face from home in Troy Nathan and his lovely girlfriend Eimear.

No pressure Troy but you never stop talking about how good it is so you better have a good day planned!!! We've a lot to see in a couple of hours!

I’ll let you know later whether or not Troy has a future as a travel guide ……

Connacht duo look forward to All-Blacks clash
Tuesday, 08 June 2010 12:15    Print E-mail

Connacht's Sean Cronin and John Muldoon are looking forward to Saturday's clash against the All-Blacks.

The Connacht pair are concluding their preparations for the shown with New Zealand in New Plymouth on Saturday (8.35am, live on Sky Sports).

Connacht captain John Muldoon, who won the first of his two caps against Canada last year, said that it was a huge honour.

"It doesn't come much bigger, to be selected for your country to play against the All-Blacks. I'm really looking forward to it," said the 27 year old who was also capped against the United States last year.

Cronin, who will start his first game for Ireland on Saturday having made his debut off the bench against Fiji last November, said that the inclusion of Muldoon and himself was a reflection on the success enjoyed by Connacht during the season.

"We had some success during the season and the selections reflect that," said Cronin, who was also capped against Wales in the RBS Six Nations, and who turned 24 last month.

Griffin and O'Halloran to start against France
Saturday, 05 June 2010 10:10    Print E-mail

Connacht's Eoin Griffin and Tiernan O'Halloran will start this Saturday evening for the Ireland U-20 side against France in the opening game of the IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina.

Corinthians clubman Griffin, from Knocknacarra in Galway city, will start at outside centre in the clash at Rosario this evening.

And Clifden native O'Halloran, who plays with Galwegians, will start on the right-wing as the RBS Six Nations U-20 champions go on a revenge mission against the French.

Ireland suffered their only defeat on their way to winning the U-20 Six Nation earlier this year when they went down to France 20-15 in Mazamet.

They went on to lift the crown thanks to wins over Italy, Wales, England and Scotland.

Coach Allen Clarke has named the same starting line-up that took on Scotland back in March when they sealed the RBS 6 Nations U-20 Championship title with a 44-15 win.

Flanker Rhys Ruddock will again captain the team, having led them to victory in the Six Nations.

The Irish replacements bench includes the fit-again Brian O'Hara and Noel Reid who did not feature in the Six Nations, along with winger Darren Hudson who scored four tries during the Championship.

Looking forward to Saturday's opener against France, Ruddock said: "We can't wait. We've been working towards this for a long time, since the end of the Six Nations.

"It'll just be good to get the first game underway, put a few things to bed and have a cut at France.

"I suppose there's expectations of us to do well in the tournament, because we performed well in the Six Nations.

"We're in a very tough group, three really difficult games to start off. Any of the teams are capable of beating each other.

"Although there's expectations, there's a sort of realistic understanding that it could go either way in any of the games."

Ireland's pool fixtures in Argentina will be broadcast live on Setanta Sports Ireland and Sky Sports, with coverage also available on the official tournament website.
