As we reach the business end of the season youth rugby comes firmly into focus. The finals for the boys cup competitions are now in sight. The under 15 and under 18 girls cup finals were contested on the 3rd of April at the Sportsground where Westport and Ballinasloe contested both finals. A great travelling crowd from both clubs cheered the players on in this exciting double header. Ballinasloe took the honours in the under 15 final producing an excellent display to defeat Westport on a score line of 52 points to 12. Westport exacted their revenge in the under 18 final as they downed their rivals 36-5. Both teams are still involved in the under league, Ballinasloe will face Galwegians in the league semi final on Friday the 15th of April. Westport await the winners in the league final which will be played in Tuam Rugby Club on Friday the 22nd of April.
Attention now switches to the boys cup competitions, silverware will be up for grabs in six different age groups ranging from under 13 up to under 18 and a half. Buccaneers will take on Ballinasloe in the under 13 Cup Final after both teams came through tough semi final matches. Buccaneers defeated Galwegians 17-14 to reach the final while Ballinasloe downed Corinthians 10-7 to set up a final between the two close rivals. This final will take place in Creggs RFC on Saturday the 23rd of April at 3.30pm.
In the under 14 cup Monivea await the winners of Ballinasloe and Creggs in the final. A replay will be needed to decide the outstanding semi final after the sides drew 9-9 last weekend. Monivea have already played four matches to reach the decider on April 24th, defeating NUIG, Gort, Corinthians and Sligo on route to the final. Ballinasloe will also appear in the under 15 Cup final where they will face off against Corinthians in the Sportsground. Corinthians were convincing winners over Sligo in their semi final which was played in Corinthian Park, while Ballinsloe came through a tough encounter against a strong Buccaneers team in their semi final.
The under 16 and under 18 and a half finals will be played as a double header in the Sportsground this coming weekend. Ballina and Buccaneers will contest both finals on the day. The two clubs have been inseparable in under 16 competitions this season with a league final still to be contested by the two sides on the 24th of April. Finally, the under 17 cup final will see Galway rivals Corinthians and Galwegians face off in the final in the Sportsground on the 24th of April. Both teams have recorded convincing wins on their way to reaching the final and it now promises to be a very tough battle for both teams.
