World Cup & Ireland Internationals Tour Connacht
Ireland internationals Mairead Coyne and Nicole Fowley visited the Connacht Rugby Easter Camp in Dangan today.

Connacht Rugby welcome four Ireland internationals to the Sportsground on Saturday night for the clash against Leinster as Mairead Coyne, Mary Healy, Ciara O'Connor and Nicole Fowley will be presented to the crowd along with the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

With seven Connacht players in the Ireland Women’s squad that were beaten by England in the 6 Nations decider last month, it is clear that the hard work being done at grassroots level in the province is paying off.

Ireland host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in August and it is a great opportunity to grow the game even further.

The Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy tour is in full swing at the moment as excitement builds ahead of the tournament.

The trophy tour continued in Connacht over the past two weeks with some fantastic festivals of rugby taking place across the province.

Ahead of the tour, the Connacht Rugby Club & Community Department organised a series of Women’s Rugby World Cup national school blitzes.

Women’s Development Officer Wendy Hickey co-ordinated the events as Connacht Rugby continue to promote girls’ rugby and the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Blitzes were played in Mayo, Sligo, Galway, Leitrim, Roscommon and Ballyhaunis with over 30 schools taking part.

Wendy was delighted with the huge success of the initiative. “The aim of these blitzes is to encourage children to play rugby as well as help to promote the Women’s Rugby World Cup that is coming to Ireland this summer. Our Club and Community Rugby Officers have been absolutely fantastic in getting their local schools involved in this initiative,” she said.

“Without their help and support, events like this just could not take place. I would like to thank all of the clubs for hosting the event, and also all the Connacht Rugby staff, volunteers and teachers for making this happen.

“The Club & Community Officers in each area were a massive help, they are doing great work on behalf of Connacht Rugby across the province and it has been fantastic to see so many girls and boys having fun playing rugby.”
