Today sees the launch of Parents in Sport Week 2017 and Connacht Rugby and the IRFU are supporting the initiative with a unique schedule of events.

The focus of Parents in Sport Week this year continues to be on highlighting the valuable role parents play – and the positive influence they have – in ensuring young people develop to their full potential and enjoy their time playing sport.

The annual week celebrating the role of parents in their children's sport runs from Monday 2nd to Sunday the 8th  of October and as part of the initiative clubs across the province will be holding parents information evenings, culminating in a Silent Sidelines campaign this coming weekend. With every club hosting this innovative project, every match at youth and mini level this weekend will see the sidelines fall silent as coaches and parents are asked to Let Them Play.

With clapping and applause for good play the only distraction, young players can focus on playing and enjoying their matches.

Speaking about the weeks activities, Spirit Officer for Connacht Rugby, Luke Murphy, said:

“We are very excited about this weekend’s Silent Sidelines Campaign, it’s a unique event and by rolling it out across the province at every youth and mini game this weekend we hope that parents and coaches can take the time to reflect on their role in the development of the young athletes under their care.”

“Parents in Sport Week is a fantastic opportunity for clubs to highlight the significant and positive role parents have on the development of their young people and we are here to support that to the best of our ability.”
