‘7s in the City’ at Dubarry Park, Athlone

The only all female Sevens in Ireland!

Ireland’s only all female Sevens Rugby tournament, ‘7s IN THE CITY’, takes place at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday next, June 6th.  At the launch of the event, tournament director Mele Kiripati outlined the event’s details and thanked the sponsors for their generous support. SMITH’S SUPERVALU is again the main patron, sponsoring the Open Competition, while National Breast Cancer Research Ireland is the designated charity of the event.

Ms. Kiripati acknowledged the support of the sponsors, particularly SMITH’S SUPERVALU who have championed this tournament for a number of years and who are sponsoring the Open competition with The Piano Bar subventing the Social section. The endorsement of host club Buccaneers RFC and The Bounty Bar too have underpinned 7s in the City’ which is being extended to provide competitions for Girls at U-12 and U-15 levels. This reflects the growing popularity in Womens rugby as does this year’s list of entrants which is double last season’s number. Teams from three provinces participated last summer with Blackrock claiming the Open title, Old Belvedere the Social competition and Carrick-On-Suir the U-18 honours. They will all be defending their titles.7s in the City organisers r-l Lorna Stuart-Trainor Mele Kiripati and Sandra Griffin pictured with Annemarie Ryan of NBCRI 500px

Representing the sponsors, Ms. Shirley Delahunt of ATHLONE TOWNCENTRE Shopping Centre (who are endorsing the free Family Fun section of the day) was fulsome in her praise and support for the commitment, capability and willingness by the Womens section of Buccaneers RFC in organising this tournament. They have proved their ability many times already and their infectious enthusiasm should again ensure a winning formula on the day.

On behalf of National Breast Cancer Research Ireland, Mrs. Anne-Marie Ryan was delighted that NBCRI was chosen as the designated charity by the ‘7s IN THE CITY’ organisers. A voluntary charity, it is dependant on donations and/or fundraisers and she was most grateful for the support of the Buccaneers club.

Club President Ray Fagan thanked all who attended the launch. He was particularly grateful to the sponsors and, judging on their previous undertakings, he was confident that Buccs’ women would deliver another successful tournament. They were already on a winner with the event’s catchy banner title! He wished them success with this already well recognised Sevens and he lauded the endeavours of NBCRI.

The action starts early on Saturday with a prize fund of €2,000 for the Womens Open competition, for which the Entry Fee is €200. The Womens Social event has €1,000 up for grabs and Entry Fee here is €120. There will be various other activities on the day, including bouncy castle, face-painting and pig on the spit, to make it a family occasion.
