Girls Lep rugby took center stage in Athlone’s  AIT on Thursday morning. Teams from Athlone Community College, the Bower and Scoil Mhuire Ballinasloe displayed some fine skills in the 1.5 hours blitz. Kieron Sloyan and Michael Horan, YDOS in Athlone and Ballinasloe, have been doing some excellent work with the girls over the past few weeks, with girls linking in with their local rugby clubs. Over 100 girls took part in the Blitz, and Wendy Hickey, Community Rugby Officer and women’s development officer, was delighted with not only the turnout, but with the talent displayed on the day. “The talent in the Athlone and Ballinasloe area is outstanding! The YDO’s have worked very well with these girls, and because of the hours spent in schools developing their skills, the girls are now interested in joining their local clubs. 17 U16 girls are now involved with Ballinasloe RFC, and Buccaneers are hoping to increase their numbers after Christmas. Many thanks to Charlie Couper, Kieron Sloyan, and Craig Worley for refereeing on the day, to Kieron for organizing the day, and to AIT for the use of their Astro turf facilities.”
