Belgian and Latvian entries have joined those from around this island for Buccaneers’ third annual Sevens and Tag Tournament, Bank Holiday Weekend, over August 4 and 5.

The SuperValu Athlone Rugby 7s Tournament and Tag Festival’s international flavour has upped its profile no end, Buccaneers Rugby public relations officer Michael Silke said just two-and-a-half weeks out from kick-off.

“Having those two entries has really bolstered the profile,” Silke said.

“Especially given there’s a healthy smattering of south-sea islanders in most other entries registered in the senior stocks thus far. Junior ranks are growing nicely and there’s still plenty of room in the womens’ block as well.”

The feature senior mens event boasts a prize pool of €2000, while the junior and womens ranks offer €1000 each. The entry fee per squad of 12 is €250 for OPEN MENS, and €200 for entering either of the other two sections.

Sideline offerings comprise family-based activities, food and drink, and of course the chance to see scintillating sevens football.

The TAG RUGBY festival will play out over Sunday the 5th for mixed teams of 12 players under IRFU rules. Discounts are available to teams entering both Sevens and Tag competitions.

Last November, 50-year-old Mike Rigney (the eldest of the legendary Rigney sporting eight) suffered a massive stroke that has left him requiring fulltime 24/7 care and assistance as well as modifications to his family home. A series of fund-raising events are taking place primarily on Friday week, July 27, when a Gala Evening will follow another Golf Classic.

The Golf Classic takes place at Portlaoise Golf Club with tees available from 7.30am on Friday 27 July. Entry fee is €200 per team of four and the competition is Stableford. The prizes will be presented at the Gala Night later that night at the Heritage Hotel.

RTE pundit and Offaly hurler Michael Duignan will be the ‘celebrity auctioneer’ at this function where a wide range of items, including many of a sporting nature, will come under the hammer.

This Sunday, July 22, there will be a Sponsored Cycle from Portlaoise Rugby Football Club, where Mike was a noted number-eight and is a former club president. This gets under way at 9.30am and will be led off by Mick Galwey.

Five of Mike’s brothers: Brian, Des, Donal, Colm and Kieran played with Buccaneers (as did Michael Duignan). Your support for this worthy cause would be greatly appreciated.
