Ballina edged out a tense encounter at the Sportsground on Sunday to claim victory over Buccaneers in the U16 Cup final. Buccaneers started the brighter of the two sides, gaining a firm foothold in the Ballina half through aggressive rucking and some clever backline attack moves. The Ballina defence stood their ground however and, with a stiff breeze behind them, hoofed the ball down-field and when the Buccs backline failed to deal with the bounce Ballina’s outhalf craig McCormick was on hand to collect and race over the try line for the games only converted score.
Buccaneers had plenty of possession and territory in the second half but Ballina put in a heroic defensive effort and held the Athlone based outfit scoreless to lift the cup at the final whistle. The final score Ballina 7 – 0 Buccaneers
