Ballina claim U16’s girls cup final

The U16’s Girls Cup blitz final took place in the Sportsground on Saturday March 23rd. Ballina, Westport, NUIG/Connemara and Tuam all played each other in a 10 a side competition, with the top 2 playing in the final. The first match involved the two most experienced sides, Ballina and Westport. It was an exciting game that finished in a 5-5 draw. NUIG/Connemara was next against the newly formed side from Tuam. Tuam did extremely well as it was their first ever game and scored 2 tries, but NUIG/Connemara won the match 20-10.

The two strongest teams dominated the rest of the day, and the highly anticipated final took place between Ballina and Westport. The score was 12-12 after the two ten minute halves, with the golden try and the cup up for grabs. It could have gone either way, as Ballina and Westport would not budge an inch. But in the end, Ballina broke through the Westport defence to claim this year’s Cup.

Many thanks to the Sportsground for making the side pitch available, and to Christy O’Sullivan who refereed on the day.
