Forwards to the Fore for Ballinasloe

A Ballinasloe comeback rescued four league points over Creggs, 15-6, at a bitterly cold Graigueawoneen on Sunday.

The locals put in a scrappy first half performance, Cathal Brophy (penalty) the only scorer for Ballinasloe, down 3-6 at the halftime mark. The second spell saw a revitalised Ballinasloe adopt a more businesslike approach to the breakdown, but met with equally stoic Creggs defence.

Forwards Mark Harrigan and JJ Carey both touched down one each, and Robert O’Beirn posted two points through the posts to secure the win and deny Creggs a vital bonus. Ballinasloe leads the J1B league a point clear of Buccaneers despite two more than the Pirates. Ballinasloe have managed a solitary bonus point throughout this campaign compared with Buccs’ eight. Loughrea and Creggs round out the top four.

Sean O’Flynn Memorial Cup That old traditional fixture for the Sean O’Flynn Memorial Cup takes place at the club’s ground on St Stephen’s Day when the President’s XV will meet an Exiles selection for cup honours. Historically, this has been a keenly contested game where former players return to pit their wits against many of the current senior squad. There are usually a few guest players on both sides to spice up the aftermatch.

Occasionally it can become a referee’s nightmare. All those who come to support will not be disappointed with the action and there is a major social gathering afterwards in the club rooms.

Christmas wishes

The club President and Committee wish all club players, coaches, friends, supporters and sponsors, and everybody associated with the club over the last year a very happy and peaceful Christmas.
