Fresh from their Junior Cup win over Gort the previous week, Ballinasloe’s senior XV travelled to Ballyhaunis on Sunday but a losing bonus point was all they

could muster against the locals in the league. In a closely fought encounter Ballyhaunis were quick to settle and had Ballinasloe on the backfoot early on.Their

pressure paid off when the block down of a Ballinasloe clearance lead to a try in the corner for Donal Byrne after 20mins. The conversion was missed.

Ballinasloe began to play with more momentum and a forceful drive by Mark Harrigan into Ballyhaunis’s 22 metre line set up the chance for Simon Hyde to kick

a drop goal in the 36th minute and they were unfortunate not to go into the break a point ahead when Ross Tyrrell was off target with a penalty on the whistle. He made

amends 6mins into the second period with a well struck kick, at the second time of asking, to inch the visitors a point in front.

Ballyhaunis responded with an unconverted try 4mins later when Vinny Moran went over following the awarding of a dubious 5metre scrum to the home side. They

increased their lead in the 67min when they mauled their way over the visitors try line after a good take at a lineout. The conversion was off target. They were reduced

to fourteen players shortly afterwards when one of their forwards was yellow carded for punching. Ballinasloe never gave up and played out the final six or seven

minutes on the Ballyhaunis line. They set up phase after phase and ran two penalties before a cross-field kick from the right hand corner by Faolan Sweeney was

perfectly measured for left winger, Ross Tyrrell, to field and touch down for an unconverted try. Final score Ballyhaunis 15- 11 Ballinasloe.
