Ballinasloe Rugby News                5/10/11

Ballinasloe had a convincing win over Corrib in this Division1B clash at Ballinasloe on Sunday . The locals were quick off the mark when going ahead in the 5th minute. No. 8, Cillian Headd ,fed scrum half, Richie Shepherd, off a scrum and he ran in a try under the posts that was converted by Robert O’Byrne. The same kicker was off target 10mins. later with a kickable penalty. The visitors pulled three pts. back with a penalty from 40 metres by Evan Flynn after 25 minutes. Ballinasloe were the more forceful side for most of the first half but poor handling let them down on more than one occasion . O’Byrne made it 10pts. to 3 at the break when landing a penalty just before the whistle.

Corrib found it difficult to get a foothold in proceedings as the second half progressed while Ballinasloe found it difficult to add to their one score lead. O’Byrne reduced their anxieties with two penalties; the second one in particular being a fine kick from the touchline in the 60th minute to push his side out to 16pts to 3 ahead. Corrib were awarded a penalty for off side at a ruck in one of their forays into Ballinasloe territory and Evan Flynn again landed the kick to reduce the margin to 10pts by the 68th minute. Ballinasloe now pressed for the killer score and it arrived with five minutes remaining. For once the hosts got their passing game together and a fluent movement across the backline lead to replacement winger, Cian Loughrey, diving over in the corner for a well worked try that was converted from far out by O’Byrne.Overall, Corrib were tenacious and and willing for the most part but found Ballinasloe too strong an outfit on the day.                                                         Ballinasloe: D.Burke, M.Gibbons, L.Feerick, J.Dunne, C.Brophy, R.O’Byrne, R.Shepherd, J.J.Carey, A.O’Hara(capt), T.Dolan, M.Harrigan, N.Staunton, H.Reynolds, C.Headd, J.Hayes.
