BUCCS ‘PLAYER OF THE YEAR’ AWARDS ON SATURDAY

The annual Buccaneers Player of the Year Awards event takes place in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, on this Saturday night, May 9th.

A 3-course meal will be followed by the presentation of awards to Buccaneers players who have represented Ireland during the season. Then the Buccaneers Player of the Year will be announced in the five adult categories, before the Clubperson of the Year will be unveiled and presented with the Michael Hanley Memorial Perpetual Cup. Tickets are now on sale at €35 each and can be purchased from the club’s Administrator at Dubarry Park (please note — during office hours 9 am to 3 pm) or from ‘A Room In Bloom’ (opposite the Sheraton hotel). Early purchase is urged to assist with catering numbers. DJ Ray O’Reilly provides the music for the occasion, so get the glad rags organised. Smart dress; no jeans!

The following have been nominated for Buccaneers Player of the Year 2014/15 awards:

THREE BUCCS IN WORLD CUP SQUAD

Three Buccaneers U-20 players have been named in the Ireland squad for the Junior World Cup which takes place in Italy, starting on June 2nd. Stephen McVeigh, Cian Romaine and Rory Moloney are the trio of young Buccs who will be bidding for starting berths. Moloney played in last season’s tournament. We congratulate our trio, who will also be honoured at the club’s Awards Night next Saturday, and we wish them all the best!

 

FIVE BUCCS PLAYERS NOMINATED FOR CONNACHT AWARDS

Buccaneers players have been nominated in five categories at the annual Connacht Rugby Awards which takes place on Saturday, May 16th, in Galway. Buccs stalwart James Tormey has been nominated in the Senior Club player section while Robbie Henshaw is a nominee for the Connacht Senior Back accolade. Cian Romaine is nominated in two categories, Academy Player and also U-20 Player where Rory Moloney too is a contender. Completing the quintet of Buccaneers nominees is Luke Carty in the U-18 section. Best of luck, guys. 

 

PITCHES OUT OF BOUNDS

All three pitches at Dubarry Park have been reseeded following their heavy fixtures schedule throughout a lengthy season. Consequently, all pitches are presently out of bounds and players are expected to respect this request.

 

SUMMER TAG LEAGUE

 

The SUMMER TAG LEAGUE will be starting shortly on Thursday, May 21st. It will run for nine weeks with the finals night scheduled for Friday, July 17th. Entries are invited now from teams for this very popular social and sporting event and entry fee is €350 per squad (which can have up to 13 players). Matches are between mixed teams of 7 players with 3 females on pitch at all times. It promises to be great ‘craic’ and the leagues will be organised in “competitive” and “social” sections. 7s in the City

 

The second “7s in the City” all female tournament at Dubarry Park, Athlone, takes place on Saturday, June 6th. Last year’s inaugural event, organised and run in the main by Buccaneers Womens squad, proved very successful and highly promising for further development. This season’s event promises extra competitions in addition to the Womens Open and Womens Social sections as well as an U-18 category. Girls U-15 and Girls U-12 grades are also planned as is extending the event to incorporate a family day with face-painting and bouncy castle, etc., while it will be rounded off that night with music in a marquee at the venue.
