Once again, a big “Thank You” to everyone who has helped in promoting the club’s “Win A Car Raffle”. A huge amount of work and a long list of volunteers have assisted to date for this key fund-raiser.
The prize on offer is a beautiful brand new stylish 2010 RENAULT MEGANE COUPE, which could be yours for just a tenner!. Tickets are on sale at €10 each or, better value indeed, three for €20. Hard to beat those prices. A handy Christmas gift that could be even better in the New Year!

Best festive wishes to all club members, committees, coaches, players, mentors, volunteers and their families for a happy and peaceful Christmas and all that’s best in 2010.
When choosing your Christmas gift, remember that Buccaneers replica jerseys are on sale at Keenan Sports while books of 3 tickets at only €20 make ideal stocking fillers. These can be purchased at sales desk in Athlone Towncentre or from committee members and coaches.
On the social front, the Fabulous Bonker Boys are live in The Bounty on St. Stephen’s Night. DJ plus late bar should make this a good all-round festive night out, so get along there early!

Deepest sympathy is extended to Tony Dolan and family on the death of his father John. Sincere condolences also to Gerry McInerney and family on the sudden untimely death of his brother Jarlath.

The AIB Cup finals are confirmed for the third successive season at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday, January 30th. The glamour of the Cup is earlier than usual in this season’s schedule. Last season’s defeated finalists (and winners of the inaugural Cup) Cork Constitution renew rivalry with Garryowen in the Senior decider at 3 p.m. which is being televised live by RTE. Two of the country’s premier clubs but, nevertheless, unlikely to attract huge support to the midlands venue. Here host club Buccaneers will be looking to the followers of  holders Tullamore or Armagh and Monivea or City of Derry to draw the crowds for the Junior final which kicks off at 1 p.m. Both Junior semi-finals fell victim to the severe weather at the weekend.

Because of the impending AIB Cup finals next month followed quickly by Ireland’s three home U-20 Six Nations Championship fixtures, the main pitch at Dubarry Park is now OUT OF BOUNDS to all teams except for Buccaneers AIB League meeting against Ballymena on January 16th. This game will now be played under floodlights with a 6.30 p.m. kick off. Buccaneers U-21 National League game against Galwegians was again postponed, due to a frozen pitch last Saturday.

The annual Exiles Match takes place on St. Stephen’s Day when the Buccaneers President’s XV bid to retain the James Moran Exiles Perpetual Cup in face of a likely strong challenge from an Exiles Selection. Rumour has it that the Exiles are pulling out all the stops to regain the coveted trophy with Joe McVeigh, Adrian Hanley and Mark Jackson among the names gleaned from their squad list! This will be whittled down on Christmas Day! This traditional fixture should again draw a good turnout to Dubarry Park when players and supporters alike can work off some of the Christmas excesses! Match starts at 2.30 p.m. with presentation of the coveted Cup taking place afterwards in The Bounty.

CONNACHT  —  3 FOR €50

Connacht, who are again enjoying a renaissance come Cup time, offer a three-match Christmas Package Deal. For just €50 you can support Connacht at their three upcoming home matches including Leinster on January 2nd. The games against Dragons on Jan. 8th and Montpellier on the following weekend are also included in the package.

‘Bud Light Tag Rugby’, the only official IRFU tag rugby event in Ireland, is coming to Dubarry Park in 2010. Registration of teams starts as early as Thursday, January 7th and leagues run nationally during the period May to August. Matches are played 7-a-side with at least 3 females per team on the pitch at any one time. Squads generally consist of 10 players but can be up to 15 players. Over 1,000 teams and approximately 12,000 players are anticipated to participate nationwide this summer with in the region of 20 new venues including Buccaneers in the upcoming programme. Full details will be advised shortly.

Good luck to Michael Cleary who starts the new year as Vice-Captain of Athlone Golf Club.

BUCCANEERS Rugby Football Club, in association with Athlone Gardai and the Athlone Drugs Awareness Group, will hold an alcohol-free Youth Disco at The Bounty over the Christmas holiday period. These supervised Discos featuring DJ Paul Harte are hugely popular with the 15/16 year old age group and admission is strictly reserved. Date to be confirmed shortly.

Congratulations to DANIEL QUALTER who scored a brace of tries in Ireland Schools victory over Italy U-18’s at Donnybrook.
