BUCCANEERS have their first taste of on-field action this season when they host Corinthians in the opening round of the Connacht Senior League at Dubarry Park, Athlone. Corinthians had sought a postponement of this Saturday scheduled fixture but, with the Ulster Bank League just a matter of weeks away, an alternative weekend was not available for Buccs so the game has been brought forward to Friday night with a 7.30 p.m. kick off.

Both sides campaigned strongly in the AIL last season and thus an attractive encounter should ensue, albeit both clubs would be minus their Connacht-contracted players. Nevertheless, the Pirates should be capable of fielding a relatively decent squad, backboned by backs such as Alex Hayman, Mark Dolan and Callum Boland with James Tormey, Martin Staunton, Diarmuid Higgins and Kolo Kiripati in the pack. Young guns like Jacob Walshe, Saba Meunargia, Conor FitzGibbon and Eoghan O’Reilly should be eager to lay down markers for the season ahead while Alan Gaughan is likely to feature following his return from Garryowen.

Meanwhile, the Seconds and Thirds will also have early starts to their league campaigns, with both teams scheduled to commence on Sunday, September 7th. The Seconds face Corrib in Headford in the Junior 1B League while the Thirds are home to Ballina’s Reserves in the Junior 1C Division. Respective Fixtures lists as follows:-

A Tullamore back-boned ‘How I Tagged Your Mother’ squad took the top honours to win the Cup in the one-day Tag Tournament at Dubarry Park on Saturday last.  A Buccaneers outfit ‘Spockers’ captured the Plate event. Thanks to all who participated and helped run this competition, particularly Yvonne O’Shea.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of the late Pat Sheehy, Derryglad, Curraghboy.
