BUCCANEERS SUMMER TAG RUGBY TOURNAMENT concludes when the various finals are played at Dubarry Park on this Friday evening with the action getting under way at 7 p.m. The weather has been very kind this summer and it’s looking good for Friday too when all teams are required to kit out in fancy dress! To contest a sports final in fancy dress is, to this writer, curiously peculiar but should nevertheless ensure good craic on the pitch. The on-field action will be followed by the presentation of prizes in The Bounty, where an enjoyable social night is sure to unfold. All are welcome to come along to watch these finals and enjoy the party atmosphere afterwards.

The coming season’s Ulster Bank League has an even earlier than usual start with the first round of matches scheduled for Saturday, September 13th. That’s two weeks earlier than the most recent couple of seasons, which had commenced earlier than heretofore. So it is back to training for all adult players from this Tuesday, July 22nd at 7 p.m. Here’s hoping to see all the familiar faces back in peak condition and raring to go! New players always welcome too.

Deepest sympathy is extended to Teresa and Michael Kiely and family on the death of Teresa’s mother Mae Mulhern. Sincere condolences also to Paddy Kilcommons on the unexpected death of his brother Tony (Athenry) and to Fergal O’Rourke and extended family on the passing of his aunt Maureen O’Rourke. Condolences also to the Deegan brothers and family on the death in Cork of their mother Mary (Bunty).

Get well wishes to Dermot Dunning, Owen Stuart-Trainor and Ray Duffy, who have all been hospitalised recently.

With three players in the British Open top ten this week, it was a good week to be Irish, especially Rory McIlroy who won his third Major and collected a cheque worth close to one million euro. But another golfer with a notable achievement (and even closer to home than Shane Lowry) was Noel Enright, who recorded his first-ever hole-in-one at Enniscrone. Well done, Noel.
