CONNACHT JIB LEAGUE CARRICK 6 BALLYHAUNIS 22

Carrick’s Connacht Junior League campaign got off to a disappointing start with a frustrating 6-22 defeat at the Leitrim Gaels Community Field last Saturday.  Carrick started well with their superior scrum providing a solid platform with new out half Ciaran Reilly proving a revelation.  Carrick raced into a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter with two McHugh penalties, the second being a tank shell from near the half way line.

Ballyhaunis though sensed that this was not a game to be won in the trenches and as they moved the ball through the backs, carrick tackles were slipped with alarming ease as the pressure increased.  Camped under the Carrick posts near half time Ballyhaunis turned their nose up at a penalty opoortunity and eventually their massive full back crashed over to leave the scores 6-5 at the break.

McHugh narrowly missed with an ambitious effort after the break but what followed added to coach Ian Fowdens grey hairs.  Sensing an opportunity the visitors sneaked a quick 22 and through a comedy of errors Ballyhaunis touched down over the line to assume a 10-6 lead.  Carrick chased the game bravely but their efforts were undermined by basic handling errors.  Ballyhaunis took advantage of some non existent tackling to add a third and while Carrick chased a bonus point a dropped pass was pounced upon to leave the game out of sight at 6-22.

Though given the scoreline it seems fanciful to suggest this was a game Carrick could have won, a solid platform had been buily leading up to half time.  However basic mistakes and below par tacking was tp prove our undoing.
