Connacht U17 League -Div 2

Carrick 8 Dunmore 22

Runaway league leaders Dunmore were the visitors to Mohill last Sunday.  Carrick were all but obliterated in the corresponding fixture in Galway earlier this year but performed with determination and bravery and though defeated emerged with honour.

The home side adapted to the aquatic conditions quicker with out half Nally nailing an early penalty to take the lead.  Dunmore soon hit back with a try but were never allowed to build up a head of steam by a tenacious home side.  Two brave penalty attempts by Nally had distance but not the direction.  Despite surviving two sin binnings Dunmore eventually managed two walk the ball over in the corner to lead at half time 10-3.

The away side sprung from the traps and took advantage of an early overlap to extend their lead as the second half commenced.  They then placed the home side in a head lock for most of the second half keeping them hemmed in their own 22 looking for the killer score.  Admirably Carrick refused to die, clinging on and driving two certain Dunmore tries back across the line.  Dunmore’s skills in the wet were a credit and eventually the Dunmore No 8 taking a ball at the base of a scrum made 40 yards to slide over the game’s killer score.

Carrick still clung on looking for a consolation score.  Adapting pick and go tactics the they crawled slowly but surely towards the Dunmore line.  Though Meehan was stopped inches short out half Nally profited from the teams good work to drop over for a consolation try.

Though defeated again Carrick can be satisfied that they played to a much higher standard than their previous outings.  If the same attitude is maintained and improved on over the four remaining matches a spot in the semi finals is well within reach.
