The Connacht Girls Schools Lep rugby Cup competition kicked off last week, with 6 schools competing in the South Connacht Section, and 3 schools competing in North Connacht.

Galwegians hosted the South Connacht leg of the Cup, with Junior and Senior teams from Ballygar, Colaiste na Coiribe, Seamount Kinvarra, Mercy Tuam, Clifden Community College, and Roscommon Convent of Mercy.

Castlebar RFC hosted the North Connacht section, with teams from Mercy Sligo, Davitt College and The Convent Ballina. Some fantastic rugby and skills were on show, and despite the weather in Mayo that day, all teams played 4 15 minute games.

These two blitz days were non competitive, giving the girls the chance to play rugby against other schools and prepare for the competitive part of the Cup  which will be taking place March 19th, venue TBC.

Wendy Hickey, Connacht Women’s Development Officer, would like to see more schools take part. “Girls schools rugby is an excellent way to learn the basics of rugby in a non contact environment, and I would love to have more schools take part next year. The programme is delivered with the help of the PE teachers, so anyone interested in taking part next year, please let me know! The girls are looking forward to the competitive part of the Cup competition, as everyone has their eye on the prize. I would like to thank Castlebar RFC and Galwegians RFC for the use of their facilities.“
