Connacht Juniors squad picked for upcoming rugby Interpros

The Connacht rugby squad to play in the upcoming Junior Interprovincial series has just been announced. Connacht’s first game in the competition is next Saturday, April 30th, at Tuam RFC, when they meet Ulster. They follow that with an away fixture against Leinster on Saturday May 7th, and finish with a home match against Munster in the Sportsground in Galway on Saturday May 14th. All games kick off at 2.30pm.
With the good showing of Sligo and Monivea in both domestic and All Ireland club competitions this season it is no surprise that these two clubs supply 60% of the players selected. Players from Ballina, Westport, Tuam, OLBC and Corrib have also been selected in what looks like the strongest squad put together in recent years, despite some player’s unavailability due to issues such as injuries, exams etc.

Head Coach, Seamus King has put over 50 players through their paces during the past few months at training sessions in Castlebar culminating in a challenge match against AIL side Connemara last Saturday, after which the squad was finalised. “We have an excellent mix of youth and experience in this squad. They are well suited to deliver on our game plan to spread the ball wide and play a fast open game which has served us well over the last few seasons”  according to King.

Two seasons ago Connacht beat Ulster and Munster at home, only to lose to Leinster, having lead by 5 points with two minutes to go, which handed the title to the Leinster men. Connacht will be looking to go one better this season.
Manager Mick Turley emphasises the determination that is in the squad to win the competition: “Our target is to win the competition for the first time. We have moved on from wanting to be competitive or winning a match. However all games are usually pretty close so it will require a tremendously focused effort, but we believe we every chance of pulling it off.”

The side is captained by Kevin Higgins from Monivea
