Connacht increase representation on IRFU National Panel of Referees.

RefsPhotoKarol Collins of OLBC has become Connacht’s latest addition to the IRFU National Referee Panel. Karol took up refereeing in January 2009 becoming a member of the Association of Referees in Connacht and quickly established himself on the domestic scene with his performances earning him promotion to the IPAS (Interprovincial Appointment System) at the beginning of the 2010/11 season. This saw Karol appointed to 6 top level Junior 1 fixtures in the other three provinces with his performance evaluated in each match by top level assessors. Karol again proved his ability and his performances were good enough to earn him promotion onto the IRFU National Panel of Referees. This will see him refereeing regularly in the Ulster Bank League from the beginning of the coming season.

David O’Brien the IRFU Referee Development Officer for Connacht was delighted with Karol’s progress.

“Karol showed immediate potential from when he started refereeing. His quick rise up the ranks is testament to his ability and aptitude as a referee. He represented Connacht and the Association of Referees with distinction on IPAS last season and I wish him all the best in what should be a long a fruitful career in refereeing”.

There is more good news for refereeing in the province as Daniel Collins of UCG has gained promotion to IPAS next season. Currently Connacht have three referees on the national panel in Dave Connolly, Dave O’Brien and Karol Collins and it is hoped that Daniel would push on to make it four.

For those interested in taking up refereeing there will be a new referee course on Saturday the 10th of September in Galway (Venue and time TBC). If interested please contact Dave O’Brien on 087-6418340 or by email at [email protected]
