Galwegians RFC played host to a Connacht Third Level 10 aside tournament last Wednesday. The tournament is one of a number of participation initiatives being run during the ‘college’ season to encourage young players male and female to stay playing the game.
On a fantastic day for rugby, 8 teams from NUIG, GMIT, GMIT Castlebar and AIT competed enthusiastically against each other in a number of action packed games. 6 of the teams were male with GMIT and AIT supplying 2 apiece and GMIT Castlebar encouragingly featuring for the 1st time in a number of years. The games were competitive with some excellent rugby being displayed throughout the day. There were also 2 female teams, NUIG & AIT, competing at the tournament, showing the quality and popularity of the Women’s game continuing to grow in the West of Ireland.
Emer O’Dowd, Projects Officer with Connacht Rugby who organised the event was enthused by what she saw on the day and said, ‘It was great to see so many players competing under the banner of their ‘college’, many of them still play for their clubs but others are returning to the game which is fantastic. We have further 7 aside, 10 aside and 15 aside tournaments planned for ‘colleges’ later in the season and hopefully we’ll get even more players participating at those events’.
