Connacht U19 Cup Semi-Final

Corrib U19s 0 – Galwegians 10

U19VCorribOn a crystal clear day in Headford Galwegians U19s progressed to the Connacht Cup Final with a hard fought 10 points to nil win over Corrib. A cold sharp wind coming off the lake and blowing across the pitch made early handling difficult as both side tried to play an expansive game. The game ebbed and flowed as neither team could get any real control as the half progressed. Eventually the more powerful Galwegian scrum started to exert real pressure on the home side and this led to the only try of the match when the imperious Tadgh Leader took a sublime line to split the defence and go over under the posts. He followed it up with the conversion to leave the half-time score at 7-0 to the visitors.

The second half turned into a kicking duel and didn’t match the first half for running skills. Wegians were struggling to string enough play to get a decent foothold in their opponents half . One of the few times they did make it into the Corrib 22 Leader converted a penalty to give the city club a 2 score cushion. Corrib piled on the pressure as they looked to get back into the game but they couldn’t break through the solid blue line of the Wegians defence.

The other semi-final between Monivea and Buccaneers ended in a draw so it will be at least another week before Wegians find out who they meet in the final currently scheduled for March 21st.
