“try to ensure 20 years of experience is not just one year repeated 20 times”

Connacht Defence Coach, Peter Wilkins, recently delivered a coaching workshop on his specialist area. Peter presented to coaches from across the province, outlining his philosophy on defence and reflecting on his journey from community coaching to the professional game. Such progression is not achieved by many and Peter encouraged those present to gain different experiences to broaden their coaching knowledge and understanding. Peter attributes his growth as a coach and career development to having experience in multiple areas of the game.

The coaches’ present got to view a practical session of activities and drills that can be used to work on both individual and team defence. A big thank you goes to the players from Corinthians U17 side that took part in the session. Towards the end of the evening there was also an opportunity for coaches to share and ask questions. This again gave a great insight into Peter’s knowledge of defence and his passion for the game.

We would like to thank Peter again for taking time out of his busy schedule to assist the Coach Development Department.

Further coaching workshops are scheduled in the new year, details of these will be released through the Connacht Rugby Club & Community website in due course.
