Connacht Rugby and IRFU Elite Player Development Officers Ambrose Conboy and Mossy Lawler, along with Connacht’s Eric Elwood, took the Connacht U16 squad for a skills session at the Sportsground last Friday.mossy1 The mid-term session brought 40 of the best U16 players from Connacht’s 27 clubs together for a full day’s training at the home of Connacht Rugby in Galway. Throughout the season the players are organised in Regional Development Squads throughout 5 Regions and had played trial matches with their respective regions earlier on in the week. The programme is overseen by Provincial Talent Coach Colm Tucker and the sessions were observed by some of Connacht Rugby’s Club & Community Rugby Officers.

Colm Tucker commented:  “It is fantastic to expose the Connacht U16 squad to the level of coaching provided by Ambrose, Mossy and Eric, which complements the excellent work being done on the ground by our CDO’s and CCRO’s during their weekly skills sessions.  Our focus for all these players is skill development centred around the big 4 – Catch Pass/Tackle/Breakdown and Ball Carry.  The clubs and schools deserve great credit for buying into the programme at this age group.  This aligned approach by the Branch and clubs/ schools is vital and the key message that cannot be lost is the player and their enjoyment playing the game and development”
