NUI Galway topped Division 3 West of the Student Sport Ireland League, pipping IT Tallaght by a single bonus point to progress through to the national semi-finals. Recording four wins from their five matches the Galway students gained four bonus points along the way, shading IT Tallaght who, despite also winning four from five, managed just three bonus points. It’s a huge boost to the NUIG students who are back competing in this league for the first time after a five year hiatus for the inter-colleges leagues.
Galway Mayo IT won the Galway ‘Colours’ match, beating NUIG 20-7 and registered a win over their provincial rivals IT Sligo to finish joint third while IT Sligo got a walkover Maynooth and earned a losing bonus point in their narrow defeat away to GMIT.
NUI Galway will now face the league winners from the North and East Divisions (IT Carlow and Queens University Belfast) as well as the best runner up (likely to be IT Tallaght) in the National semi-finals on Tuesday 8th December.
