Garbally College hosted Sligo Grammar in yesterday’s Senior Schools Cup pool game. Garbally College came out on top with a last minute try from Stephen Tierney sealing a hard fought 14-12 victory. Sligo Grammar started the brighter and after some early pressure Michael Green put them 3-0 ahead with a well struck penalty. Garbally immediately responded from the restart with a kick against the breeze from Sean Horan leaving the score at 3-3. The game was a tense, physical battle throughout dominated by the goal kicking of Horan and Green. It looked like a draw was on the cards with about 15 minutes left as the game stood at 9 a peice with neither side apparently able to make the breakthrough. At this point Grammar upped their game and forced a penalty which Green dispatched with aplomb into the wind leaving his team 12-9 to the good. Garbally weren’t finished and they began to attack from deep at every opportunity, one such attack led to a penalty 30metres out and well within kicking distance. However, Stephen Tierney took everybody by surprise and tapped and went touching down in the corner to give Garbally the lead for the first time in the game. They saw out the remaining 2 minutes of the game to give them top spot in the pool and a home semi-final.
