The sun shone on Dangan for the NUIG/Na Bairneachaí National School Blitz on Tuesday morning as the 150 pupils descended on the home of NUIG RFC. The annual event saw pupils from 5th and 6th classes from six local primary schools gather together for the non-competitive blitz. Teachers from Scoil Bhríde Mionloch, St Joseph’s NS Buaile Beag, St Enda’s NS, Galway Educate Together, Knocknacarra NS and Bush Park NS oversaw their students play against each other over four pitches which were refereed by staff from Connacht Rugby.
Club & Community Rugby Officer Conor Galvin organised the event and was delighted with the turnout adding:
“It’s great to see so many young players taking up the game, some of these students have only had a couple of sessions of coaching so to put them in an environment like this where they can enjoy the game with their peers is a fantastic step in their rugby development. Today is all about the fun and engagement and hopefully we’ll see a number of these pupils go on to play with the local clubs, including Na Bairneachaí and NUIG, in the coming seasons.”
Paying tribute to the principals and teachers for their role in organising the day Conor said:
“Without the help and support of the heads and the teachers today would not have been possible, they are a key component in an event like this so a massive thanks to all who’ve taken time out of their schedules to ensure these kids have every opportunity to take part. I have to offer a big thanks to the staff who came out to referee and help coach the schools as well, the skill and expertise of Wendy Hickey, Ja Naughton and Matt Henderson are a huge asset to be able to call on and it helps make days like this a huge success.”
