The student rugby team of NUIG hosted their GMIT counterparts in the first Student Sport Ireland Men’s Division 3 West clash on Wednesday.
Played in the historic grounds of Dangan in soft weather conditions both sides were chomping at the bit having had a taste of each other in the Connacht Colleges 10 aside blitz two weeks previous. GMIT came out of the blocks fastest and two converted first half tries gave them a 14-0 lead going into the break.
NUIG hit back with a converted try of their own deep into the second half but two confident penalties from GMIT snuffed out any hope of a comeback and they ran out eventual winners, the final score NUIG 7 – 20 GMIT
This was the first leg of the home and away format of the league and the first meeting of the two Galway based colleges in a full ‘colours’ match and both teams are already relishing the opportunity to get stuck back into each other when the return leg comes around next Spring.
