Heineken Junior Cup Final – Galwegians RFC v Westport RFC

Sunday 30th of March, 3pm, Sportsground

Last year’s beaten finalists Galwegians will look to go one better this time around in the Heineken Junior Cup final 2014. Standing in their way will be Westport RFC who are looking to transfer their impressive end of season league form that saw them avoid relegation from J1A into this cup and come out on top.

Galwegians as a club are on a high at the moment, having just been crowned the Ulster Bank League 2A champions, and their highly talented seconds team that will compete in this final were also the champions of J1B after relegation from J1A last year. They will be looking to prove that they belong amongst the top Junior clubs in Connacht, and can start to show that with a win on Sunday. They’ve done it the hard way in getting to the final, accounting for Corrib, Tuam, defending champions Monivea, and last years plate finalist Ballinasloe.

Westport’s team have shown the benefits of a strong youth structure, with a timely infusion of U19s and U20s benefitting their team. Westport could have up to eight players in their 15 that have come up through the ranks in the Mayo club and are all still under 20. Westport after J1A sides got a bye into the second round were comfortable winners at home to Dunmore, before dispatching runaway J1A winners Corinthians and round robin entrants OLBC comfortably.

Westport will be hoping to earn their first Junior Cup title since 1975, but Galwegians will fight to the end. It will be one of the most interesting finals in recent years, with both teams bringing a lot of positive form into the match and it will not be one to miss.
