Ireland Head Coach Joe Schmidt today announced a pared down 34-man national squad for the opening two games of the 2014 RBS Six Nations against Scotland and Wales.

Connacht’s Robbie Henshaw has been included in the reduced squad as one of 16 backs. The 20-year-old has three international caps to his name following last summer’s tour to North America where he made his debut in the green jersey coming off the bench against Canada and going on to start at fullback against the USA a week later.

In the 2013 November Series, Henshaw came off the bench against Australia, replacing Brian O’Driscoll temporarily in the first half and then later coming on for fullback Rob Kearney.

Ireland open their 6 Nations campaign next Sunday, 2nd February when Scotland visit the Aviva stadium (3pm).
