Connacht opened their 2014/15 season with a friendly against Clermont Auvergne in France last night as part of the Challenge Auvergne de Rugby tournament.

Despite the 42-7 result in favour of a full-strength Clermont side eight days from the start of their Top14 campaign, Pat Lam and his coaching team were pleased with the challenge in terms of preseason preparation and the blending of new signings and development players into the squad.

Nearly 30 Connacht players were given game time over the 80 minutes and new winger Niyi Adeolokun was responsible for Connacht’s first score when he ran over in the corner on 45 minutes. Galway-born Darragh Leader, starting at outside centre last night, kicked the conversion.

Clermont’s six try scorers were Debaty (3”), Bonnaire (13”), Vahaamahina (34”), Nakaitaci (36”), Malzieu (40”) as well as a penalty try on 66 minutes.

Outhalf Camille Lopez kicked six conversions while Australian replacement Brock James was responsible for the final two pointer.

Connacht’s next preseason game is in two weeks time when the team travel to London to play Wasps on Saturday August 23rd.
