The Connacht Junior 1A League is set for an early start this year with the opening round this Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September.

On Saturday, Castlebar will host Connemara with a kick-off time of 5:00pm and Tuam will host Westport kicking off at 7:00pm. At 2:30pm on Sunday, Ballinasloe will host Our Lady’s Boys Club and last years champions Monivea will be hosting last year’s runners up Ballina. Corinthians start off the season with a bye weekend due to the odd number of clubs in the league. Saturday rugby is something new this season for the clubs with clubs being given greater control over when they play their fixtures..

Castlebar v Monivea 2013-14With Castlebar up from the Junior 1B League and Connemara down from the Ulster Bank League, it should make for an interesting match. Last season’s first match between Tuam and Westport on Tuam’s pitch, Tuam came out on top with a final score of 13-12. In their second match against each other last season on Westport’s pitch, Westport came out on top with the final score being 32-19. Tuam will be hoping for a repeat win at home against Westport to begin their season.

On the traditional Sunday match time, newcomers to the 1A league Ballinasloe will be hosting last season’s fifth ranked team Our Lady’s Boys Club which should make for an enjoyable match. The match to watch this weekend, however, will be Monivea vs. Ballina. In last season’s first match-up between the two sides in Ballina, Monivea came out on top 12-10. In the second match-up in Monivea, Ballina left with the win 23-22. Being last year’s champions, Monivea will be hoping for a win to defend their title but Ballina will be hoping for a repeat win while on Monivea’s pitch. No matter how the match ends up, it should be a good one to watch to start the season off.
