Connacht Senior Schools League Final – Marist College 13 0 Sligo Grammar

Marist College emerged victorious from the Connacht Senior Schools League decider against Sligo Grammar at Ballyhaunis on Wednesday afternoon. In what was a repeat of last year’s League Final and indeed cup Final Marist looked the sharper side from the off. The Athlone school played an open brand of rugby releasing their potent backline whenever they got the chance. Some incisive attacking play inside the first 10 minutes saw Barry Goode slot a well struck penalty from 30metres out. Sligo Grammar then enjoyed a period of territorial dominance showcasing their strong forward runners but were ultimately unable to convert pressure into points.

Senior Schools Trophy350Goode then kicked Marist deep into Grammar territory. From the resultant lineout the Marist pack launched a ferocious driving maul which was held up just short. Marist scrum half Robert Ashe released the ball to his ever willing backline and after some impressive lines of running it was Cormac Langan who powered over in the left hand corner. Goode added an impressive conversion and an excellent penalty a few minutes later to bring the score to 13 – 0.

Grammar began the second half with real purpose as they looked to open their account and put themselves back into the game. However they were unable to do so as Marist defended well. The Sligo school struggled to get out of their half from here as Marist attempted to turn the screw and secure victory. Despite the almost constant pressure on the Sligo line they refused to budge and showed admirable character to hold Marist scorers in the second half.
