Mini’s Rugby at the Sportsground

Guard of Honor

Last Saturday’s Connacht Rugby v Benetton Treviso fixture saw our Minis take to the pitch for the half-time show. 120 kids from Ballinrobe RFC, Portuma RFC, An Ghaeltacht RFC, Castlebar RFC, Carrick-on-Shannon RFC and Sligo RFC braved the elements to play at the Sportsground in front of a 4,112 home crowd.

The six clubs began their journey in the Clan Terrace when they met senior players David Moore and Mick Kearney. The Minis then took to the field and warmed up the home crowd with their pre-match parade. With the Connacht Rugby flags raised high; they marched the length of the pitch and finished by forming a guard of honour for both teams as they ran out to rapturous support. At half time, with Eric Elwood’s side leading 13-0, the Mini players entertained the crowd with a display of their own rugby skills.

With Connacht Rugby going on to win the match 18-3, there was great support from the Bohermóre end of the Clan Terrace as 120 rising rugby stars cheered on their home province to victory.

A big thank you to Wendy Hickey (CRO), and to the coaches and parents who helped make the evening possible.
