Connacht Rugby extend sympathies to the family of Sean Calleary

Connacht Rugby would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Sean Calleary following his passing over the weekend. Sean was a former President of the Connacht Branch of the IRFU and his local club Ballina RFC.

In the 1950s he was a key player for Connacht on the field, and in 1958 he was part of the Connacht side that defeated Ulster in Ravenhill. During his playing days he also represented Galwegians RFC as well as Garbally College and University College Galway.

Away from the Rugby pitch he was best known for his incredible contribution to Irish public service. He held a number of ministerial posts including Minister of State at the Department of Public Service from 1979 to 1981, at the Department of Trade, Commerce and Tourism in 1982 and at the Department of Foreign Affairs from 1981 to 1987.

Paying tribute to Sean Calleary, CEO of Connacht Rugby, Willie Ruane said: “On behalf of Connacht Rugby I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Sean Calleary. Throughout his life he represented the west of Ireland to the highest standards through sport and his contribution to Irish public service. On the sad occasion of his passing, we acknowledge the immense legacy that he has left behind.”
