Portwest and Connacht Rugby launch new campaign to highlight road safety
Portwest, in partnership with Connacht Rugby, has launched a new road safety campaign called “Be Bright on Safety”, which aims to highlight the importance and responsibility of all road users when it comes to safety this winter.
The campaign also involves a World Record attempt to have the greatest number of people wearing high visibility vests in one location.
The record attempt will take place at The Sportground on College Road in Galway, where Connacht Rugby take on Munster on Saturday 21st December in the Guinness Pro14 Championship.
The Guinness World Record currently stands at 2,499 people and Portwest is confident it will easily surpass this number on the night of the local derby match. According to Anne McNicholas, Sales and Marketing Manager at Portwest; “The Christmas interprovincial game between Connacht and Munster is always highly anticipated and is a guaranteed sell-out fixture at The Sportsground. So, our aim is to double the current record and hopefully have 5,000 people all in hi-vis vests on the night”.
Ms McNicholas added: “The campaign also has a serious message about road safety and reinforce the important role that every road user has when it comes to their own safety and that of others. We want to use the record-breaking attempt as a fun and engaging way to get this across to people while also getting them involved in something very special”.
Commenting on the initiative, Partnerships Manager at Connacht Rugby, Gavin Duffy  said: “We are delighted to be a part of the campaign and I’ve no doubt that our supporters will fully get behind the record attempt as well given how important it is to continue to raise awareness for road safety. Saturday, 21st December is the shortest day of the year so it’s quite apt that we’re able to attempt the world record at the game. Given the amount of people travelling over Christmas, it’s also an opportune time to highlight road safety to all”.
Details of how people can take part in the World Record attempt will be announced closer to the match day but it is expected that anyone attending the Connacht verses Munster match will be able to play their part with Portwest supplying the hi-vis vests on the night.
