This Wednesday, 19th March sees a double header in Ballina RFC starting with the Senior B Boys Schools Cup Final at 11:00 AM followed by the Senior A Boys Schools Cup Final at 2:00 PM.
With the work still ongoing in Dexcom Stadium, this Wednesday's schools double header will be held in Ballina RFC. The first final of the day is the Senior B Boys Schools Cup Final which will see a relpay of last year's Senior B Cup Final between Presentation College Athenry and Coláiste Bhaile Chláir where Presentation College Athenry edged out the Claregalway side to take home the trophy in Dexcom Stadium. The two schools not only faced each other in the Senior B Cup final, but also in the Junior Schools Cup as well so these players will know their opposition very well coming into this final. Presentation College only fell to Rice College in their Round 3 Senior B League match but stormed back with a decisive win against Clifden CS in the Semi-Final to see them once again face Rice College in the Senior B League final where this time they made no mistake in taking the victory. Both teams hit the ground running in their Senior B Boys Schools Cup campaigns where they were drawn into the same pool. They faced each other in Round 2 of their Cup campaign where it was Coláiste Bhaile Chláir that got the upper-hand on that occasion. Continuing with a clean record, Coláiste Bhaile Chláir sealed their place in the Cup Final. Presentation College Athenry also showed skill and determination by recording all wins aside from the loss to Coláiste Bhaile Chláir and then went on to claim their spot in the Senior B Boys Schools Cup Final after a 19-8 Semi-Final win over Gort CS. With familiarity and history between these two sides, the Senior B Boys Schools Cup Final is sure to be absolutely electric. The second final of the day will see three-time reigning champions Sligo Grammar take on old rivals Marist College Athlone in the coveted Senior A Boys Schools Cup Final. With Sligo Grammar having taken home the trophy in 2022, 2023 and 2024, Marist will be looking to de-throne the Sligo side and bring the trophy down the N4 to Athlone. These two sides have only met once this season thus far when they prouced an absolutely thrilling Senior A Boys Schools League Final back in December which saw Marist come out with a 3-point win. Both teams have had their eyes on the prize this season, topping their tables in the League and Cup and storming into the final with clean records except their one meeting in the League Final in December 2024. One step away from another Cup Final rematch, Marist welcomed an impressive Coláiste Éinde side for their Semi-Final where they won 32-17 while Sligo Grammar travelled to Ballinasloe to face Garbally College in their Semi-Final where they sealed their Cup Final spot with a 19-10 win. Having eyes set on one another for another year, the Senior A Boys Schools Cup Final between Marist College and Sligo Grammar will be one for the ages.
