Position Title: Assistant Coach – 1st XV (Attack/Backs Coach)
Reports To: Director of Rugby/Head Coach

Overview
The University of Galway Rugby Club is seeking to appoint an ambitious candidate to join the Men’s Rugby coaching team for the 2025/26 season. The successful candidate will play a key role in preparing the Men’s squad for the Connacht Junior League, and Junior Cup, working closely with the Head Coach and Director of Rugby to deliver an effective, modern, and player-focused coaching programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of backline coaching, including launch plays, attacking structures, and positional skills.
- Assist in planning and executing engaging and purposeful training sessions aligned with the team’s playing philosophy and goals.
- Provide individual feedback and technical support to backs, with a focus on performance improvement and player development.
- Attend and contribute to all senior men’s training sessions (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and matchdays (typically Sundays).
- Collaborate with the wider coaching and support team to review performance, refine tactical approaches, and evolve playing style.
- Support the development of a positive and inclusive club culture that reflects the values of the University of Galway.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Minimum IRFU Stage 3 Coaching Accreditation (or equivalent)
- Demonstrated experience coaching backlines at Club or University level.
- Strong technical knowledge of the modern game, particularly in back play, attack systems, and decision-making.
- A commitment to player development, including the ability to coach and mentor athletes at varying stages of their rugby journey.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
- Availability to commit to the full rugby season including pre-season, training, and fixtures.
Commitment
- Pre-season (August – September): 2 sessions per week (days/times to be agreed)
- In-season:
- Training: Tuesday & Thursday evenings, 6.00pm – 8.30pm
- Matchdays: Sundays (typically 1.30pm – 5.30pm)
- Occasional club events, coaching workshops and CPDs
