NUIG 48 – UCG Legends 36

The University playing fields in Dangan were witness to a momentous battle last Saturday as a team of former players took on the current crop in a classic past v present match. The College team of 2005, led by Limerick native Jeff Neville, were able to call on players from a wide variety of backgrounds and players came from as far as Aberdeen and London, as well as across the country in what was to be a 10 year reunion that no one will forget. The current team were equally primed for the match and eager to prove their ability against players they had only heard myths and legends about, the side led by flanker Josh Dunne on the day.

The game was marshalled by NUIG stalwart John Martin and it was the old boys who got on the score sheet first after some aggressive counter-rucking led to a turnover and open space out wide for a well-earned score. That was all the motivation the current Connacht J1C champions needed to up the ante and from there the game opened up into a free flowing contest which pitted youthful exuberance and silky skills against dogged determination and a decade of experience.

The final scoreline reflected the ambition and ability of both teams to keep a fast and open contest alive and there will be talk of some of the outrageous offloads on both sides for many years to come.
