An Ghaeltacht Rugbaí’s September venture matures this weekend, as its youngsters head off to Italy…(sort of).

The Cheathru Rua-based rugby club hosted its fifth annual Triatalan earlier this winter, and three of its top-earners secured themselves seats in The Aviva for Saturday’s Italy fixture.anGhaelx1_640x480

Featuring a raft of under10,11,and under12 players, each ran one kilometre, cycled five, and swam 25metres in the village lake! Winter temperatures in the far west are not famed for their forgiving nature, but the hardy bunch plodded, pedalled and plowed their way through the course smiles and core body temperatures intact.

Colm Mac Donncha (11s), Reamoinn O Suileabhain (10s) and Killian O Suileabhain in the 12s pulled in the most support and will reap their reward this Saturday lunchtime when they hope Ireland reaps its own.

The Conamara Gaeltacht has made waves this winter well beyond the lake too, where its junior team asserted themselves as development force to be reckoned with in both league and cup fixtures, and several under15s and 16s helped Corinthians finish just shy of their respective league tables.

Club minis look well set to follow in those footsteps too, be they youths leagues or Saturday’s men-in-green.
