Ballina RUN-FOR-CHRISTCHURCH Virtual Charity Run
Over 50 runners, walkers and even a cyclist, all wearing the Canterbury colours of red and black, took part in the Ballina County Mayo Run-for-Christchurch Charity race on Saturday the 12th March 2011.
Starting at midday from the Ballina RFC in Creggs Road the run did a 5kms circuit up the Quay and back.
The event is a virtual worldwide fun run – anyone can participate, anywhere, anytime. Over the weekend 82 events were organized all over the world with many other smaller groups also getting involved.
Over €1120 was raised, an amazing amount which exceeded all expectations. All proceeds will go to the New Zealand Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund.
Young and old were amongst the runners. Gerry O’Donnell the oldest runner declined to give his age but is estimated to be around 90 years plus. The youngest runners were Ben Thornton (5 years), Dilan Thornton (8 years) and Leah Thornton and Daniel Loftus (both 9 years).
Well done to everyone for participating and all those who came down and supported the event, including the parents of Mini Rugby who also donated generously.
