Connacht Rugby Skills Coach Dave Ellis is into his second season with the province after arriving in Galway from New Zealand last November to join Pat Lam’s coaching team.

Charged with maximising skill development in players, Ellis’ typical day involves directing short, focused drills’ sessions in rotation with a small group of players.

“A huge part of what we do here at Connacht Rugby is ensuring we have a rugby programme that develops players so that they can perform the basic skills under pressure and against any team they face”, said Ellis.

“While some players recovering from injury or recent surgeries may be restricted in terms of running and full rugby sessions, we make sure they are still challenged on a daily basis when it comes to skill development. That’s very important.”

“In this clip, we can see the recovery group involved in a fast-moving drill where their skills are tested under a number of different stimuli. For example, the player is asked to respond to a number of different questions or call out colours that we display with cards, all while practising and repeating a particular skill.”
