St Muredach’s College Ballina were crowned Connacht Schools U14 Regional League champions on Wednesday following a comprehensive victory over CBS Roscommon. Muredach’s ran in 7 tries in total to beat their Roscommon rivals by 45 points to 10 in the final which was played in Ballyhaunis Rugby Club. St Muredach’s captain Niall Feeney got his side off to the perfect start when he scored the opening try of the game after 3 minutes. The extra’s weren’t added due to a malfunction with the kicking tee, the 5-0 lead was the least the Muredach’s deserved following their bright start to the game.111IMG_20160518_130637
CBS responded well with a prolong period of possession in the Muredach’s 22’ following the restart. They should have found themselves level on the 10 minute mark but for an unfortunate knock-on when driving over under the posts. Muredach’s capitalised on this CBS mistake when the impressive Feeney broke from the halfway line to score his sides second try. The conversion was added by the Muredach’s number ten to leave the score line at 12-0 mid way through the opening half. On 25 minutes Dylan Thornton, the St Muredach’s winger, got in for his first try of the game and the game was further put out of sight on the stroke of half time when Feeney grabbed his hatrick to leave the score 26-0 to St Muredach’s.
CBS Roscommon gathered themselves well after the break and got their opening try when the impressive Jack Tucker powered over from close range. Roscommon could well have added to this score in the minutes that followed but couldn’t capitalise on a period of sustained pressure in the Muredach’s half. On 38 minutes Muredach’s got over for their 5th try of the match as Thorton again crossed after a brilliantly timed kick and chase. Seven minutes later Sean Walkin got in on the act for the Ballina outfit as he crossed under the posts. With the extras again added by the Muredach’s number 10 the score line reached 40 points to 5 with time running out.
CBS weren’t finished yet however as their speedy winger Kevin Glynn touched down after an excellent solo effort. It was Muredach’s who had the final say, Dylan Thornton became their second player to grab a hatrick when the crossed the try line in the final play of the match. Final score St Muredach’s College Ballina 45 CBS Roscommon 10.
