Over twenty-five pupils of St. Paul’s Oughterard were welcomed guests at the Sportsground this week in the build up to Saturday’s PRO12 clash with the Ospreys.
Having entered and won a competition run by Connacht Rugby’s Official Fuel Partner and Schools Cup sponsor, Top Oil, the Junior Development Cup team at St Paul’s were treated to an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of the Connacht Rugby professional squad and their gruelling training regime.
Led by Connacht coaches Pat Lam and Conor McPhillips, the young players were invited to sit in on the pro team’s video analysis session that took a detailed look at the Welsh opposition and planned out the afternoon pitch session. It was blue skies over the side pitch at the Sportsground as the squad then entered into a no-holds-barred training session under the watchful eye of the visiting students who were then given a training session of their own under the guidance of the senior coaching team.
Speaking about the day, Shane Joyce, Junior Cup team captain at St Pauls said:
“It was unbelievable to spend the day at the Sportsground and have a look at what it takes to be part of a professional rugby team. To meet all the players and to be coached by Pat Lam was such a great experience for all the team and one we’ll never forget.”
Ray O’Neill, rugby coach at St Pauls added:
“On behalf of the team and coaches at St . Pauls, I would like to thank all at Connacht Rugby for a fantastic day. The lads spent an afternoon with their rugby heroes and got a behind-the-scenes insight into life as a professional rugby player. I would especially like to thank Top Oil for putting together this prize and allowing us this incredible opportunity.”
